THE COMPANY

Quad9 is a free security solution that uses DNS to protect your system against the most common cyber threats. It improves your system's performance, plus, it preserves and protects your privacy. It's like an immunization for your computer.  Quad9 routes your DNS queries through a secure network of servers around the globe. The system uses threat intelligence from more than a dozen of the industry's leading cyber security companies to give a real-time perspective on what websites are safe and what sites are known to include malware or other threats. If the system detects that the site you want to reach is known to be infected, you'll automatically be blocked from entry - keeping your data and computer safe. 

 

THE POSITION

The General Manager (GM) is the key management leader for Quad9.

The GM is responsible for formulating the strategy of the organization on technical, structural, legal, and financial directions and for providing guidance on important tactical decisions as they relate to goals. As Quad9 matures into one of the world’s largest cybersecurity and rights-oriented service platforms, the GM will be instrumental as the most visible member of the team speaking to a global community of technology organizations, governments, civil society interest groups, and ultimately to hundreds of millions of end users.

Fundraising and partnership development are significant components of the GM’s responsibility. Transitioning the organization to more diverse funding origins is a critical priority, as well as solidifying existing funding sources and partnerships.

The GM will also be strengthening the corporate structure and administrative resources of the organization, bringing in their experience in managing the financial concerns of small to mid-sized organizations. Solidifying corporate structure within the existing Swiss main entity, as well as US and EU non-profit subsidiaries, is a critical component of continued successful operations.

Quad9 has a strategic placement in the privacy and security civil society communities, and the General Manager will work with policy and technical audiences as well to promote the mission of Quad9 and general internet privacy/security.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Mission and Strategy

  • Lead, develop, implement, the strategic plan in collaboration with the Council and senior staff Provide leadership and direction to staff, ensuring the development of a professional organization with strong and inspirational team leadership fully engaged with Quad9’s strategic goals;
  • Ensure consistency of alignment between the mission and the strategic goals.

Fundraising and Partnership Development

  • Develop a sustainable fundraising model and oversee all fundraising efforts;
  • Build fundraising and grant management resources to support the organization on the long term;
  • Evaluate new funding sources and advise the Council on the strategic implications of a range of funding opportunities;
  • Develop and cultivate donor or sponsor relationships for expanded or new in-kind support of Quad9’s mission.

Policy and Legal

  • Develop policy guidelines for DNS environment aligned with Quad9’s goals, independently or in conjunction with allies in civil society, enterprise, or governmental sectors; advocate in appropriate fora;
  • Lead development of internal policies regarding data privacy and integrity of the DNS system in relation to Quad9’s position in the technology ecosystem, in conjunction with the Council, staff, and external advisors.
  • Manage and supervise legal issues that intersect with Quad9’s mission and activities;

Financial Oversight and Development

  • Oversee the financial management of the organization, including the development of long and short-range financial plans, monitoring the budget, and ensuring that sound financial controls are in place;
  • Set financial priorities accurately to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the program and staff;
  • Ensure the financial integrity of the organization and accurately reflect and make visible the financial health to the Council via an annual budget, quarterly financial reporting, or upon request.

Organizational Strengthening

  • Day-to-day management of Quad9;
  • Guide senior staff in aligning decision-making with organizational mission and objectives;
  • Support and motivate staff, coaching senior staff in setting clear goals, and promoting a healthful work environment that respects both the personal and the professional;
  • Facilitate team collaboration and strengthen internal communications with staff throughout the organization;
  • Nurture a culture of transparency and accessibility of leadership and organizational decision-making;
  • Prioritize diversity in hiring and in programming decisions and develop policies and a culture that supports diversity, respect, and inclusion in the workplace;
  • Support and promote professional information and knowledge management practices across all areas of the organization.

Council Management

  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Council, and ensure open and regular communication regarding the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals;
  • In collaboration with the Council and senior-level staff, develop a transparent process for assessing impact and evaluating organizational progress on an annual basis.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Leadership & Vision

  • Transparent, recognized, and high-integrity leadership;
  • Ability to convey the vision of Quad9’s strategic future to staff, the Council, donors, and the broader network;
  • Strong organizational abilities, including people management, strategic process leadership, program development, and professional mentorship;
  • Five or more years of senior non-profit management experience;

Stakeholder management & Policy development

  • Significant personal network within Internet networking or civil society communities;
  • Experience leading collaboration with board members, staff, and institutional partners;
  • Ability to interface and engage diverse groups;
  • Ability to represent the organization publicly.

Execution

  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations;
  • Budget management skills and experience, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to oversee, motivate, and collaborate with staff from a range of backgrounds and skill-sets;
